The Lean Mean Racing Machine

24 Hours of Afton

Year 2001 Races

The Lean, Mean, Racing Machine

Gerald rides a 1999 baby blue Trek 8000. After numerous falls, weeks of complaining and an entire season in platforms, he finally made the permanent move to clips in 2001.

Has it made him a better rider? Undoubtedly. Was it a painful decision? Yes. Would he recommend it for those thinking of making such a move? Most definitely.

Riding a technical after the 2002 Fall Classic at Birch Ski. Thanks to Elizabeth B. for snapping such a cooool photo!

24 Hours of Afton - 2001 (Version 8, August 2001)

Returning to Minnesota in August of 2001, once again four Canadians conquered the Afton Alps. This year they rode the four-person Open category (each team member rides all they want for 24 hours -- add up the laps to see which team wins).

The Canadian flag flew proudly in the campsite and on each bike. Many an American was heard to sing "Oh Canada" as the Denominators passed by. Unfortunately, the only lyrics ever heard were "Oh Canada, hmmm mhhhm hmmm hmhmhhm". Oh well, I suppose most Canadians can't sing the entire Star Spangled Banner either.

Paul and Ger prepping the beasts before the big ride (Paul looked like this most of the weekend).

Angie and Paul loading up on carbs. Spaghetti was the best dish there. The chili ranked pretty highly too (but was regretted afterwards).

Audrey crashed hard (several times) in her first lap and was immobilized for the rest of the race. Lucky she brought her inflatable couch.

Ger finishing up the final lap about 5:30, Saturday Afternoon. He managed 10 laps (about 116 km).

Sleepy heads after a hard-earned 24 hours of general silliness. Yes indeed, that couch came in handy.

Misc. Race Pics

Here are some pics from various races in the 2000 MCA season.

Angie, Gerald and Riki during the 6hr Relay at Birch

Angie and Jackie with thier winnings for Best Woman's Team (shades, food and stuff).

Deanne before the "Mud-Bowl" at Swan River. Isn't she a cutey?

Craig "The Baker", Deanne, Angie, Gerald and Paul after the gruelling Manitoba Provincials in July. Angie won the Gold Medal.

"Ready, Set..." at Killarney. Gerald's the guy in the red jesey at the front of the line (but not for long).

A "Lemans" start at Birch in July. We had 3 or 4 of these running starts over the season. (including Afton).

Negotiating the switchback at Birch in June. This was the Bring a Friend Event that saw over 250 riders come out on a great sunny afternoon.

The start of the IceBike 2000 at the Forks. 75+ riders, lots of snow, chills spills and general craziness.

Steve leading Gerald somewhere on the first lap. Steve nearly succumbed to an asthma bout, but perservered and completed the race in fine form.
